Miley helps fight against development in Attwood
Posted in NewsPoliticians and a Hollywood star have teamed up to fight development in Attwood.
Shadow Planning Minister Brian Tee and Yuroke state Labor MP Liz Beattie took a life size cut out of popstar Miley Cyrus to Attwood this morning in protest the State Government’s green wedge plans.
But it could have been in vain with the State Government unlikely to move the parcel of land within the Urban Growth Boundary.
The Leader reported in September that the government was likely to abide by a recommendation by the Growth Areas Authority to keep the land outside the UGB.
That was despite a Hume Council submission in 2009 requesting that it be included in the UGB so it could be developed into a business park.
Mr Tee said if the Attwood land was included it would completely change the neighbourhood.
“Once that neighbourhood character is gone, it’s gone forever,’’ Mr Tee said.
Planning Minister Matthew Guy is expected to release his report on the green wedge area in the coming days.
Last year the Government overturned a decision about a housing development in Phillip Island after Miley Cyrus gave her support to a community campaign.
“Mr Guy has previously been forced to backdown when faced with overwhelming public sentiment, which is why we have brought Miley Cyrus with us,’’ Mr Tee said.
Ms Beattie joked that it was good of Miley to come to the suburbs.
“Residents are still concerned and they are concerned by the silence, they want some certainty,’’ she said.
Ms Beattie said there was plenty of other land in Hume that could be used for industrial purposes.
The Leader is waiting for comment from Minister Guy’s office.
